The web based market is the largest for online games with approximately 55 million players, compared to the smaller markets of massive multiplayer online games which has approximately 1.5 million players. The revenue per player is however much greater for massive multiplayer online games.
Best performing titles for online web based games are the ones that are easy to learn and hard to master. This is a relatively new market segment that attracts a different type of consumers, to a large part newbie players that do not play console-based or CD-ROM games.
There is currently a market of 55 million casual gamers. It has grown from 39 million in 2000. These are gamers not willing to shell out monthly subscription fees for online games.
Some companies believe that the best way to attract players is to build social activities around there games. Also the increased cooperation between Hollywood and game developers will bond players to the games.

It looks like finally Sun Microsystems are starting to target the game audience. With it's release of the java.com website, it clearly shows that Java is a good competitor to Flash in online gaming.
